Around the end of the first century, Plutarch wrote the Parallel Lives — Bíoi Parálleloi — pairing a Greek and a Roman life in each volume: Alexander beside Caesar, Demosthenes beside Cicero. His wager was simple: a life on its own is a list of facts, but two lives side by side give you insight.
